Shared Living

Shared Living is a home support program where individuals live in a provider's family home.   Individuals receive 24 hour support from home providers who assist and support the individuals to work toward goals identified in their individual plan.   The overall program goal is to improve individual's independence, personal safety skills while enriching and enhancing their life.

The Shared Living program has become a preferred choice for many individuals who receive Mainecare funded services.   Shared Living is a great option for many individuals as it provides an alternative living situation for those who may not want to live in a group home setting yet require support to live as independently as possible.    It is more consistent than a shift staffed home and provides the opportunity to meet each individual's unique needs.    The family like atmosphere offers a greater opportunity for inclusion in the community and to form natural connections.

Shared Living home providers are carefully screened and have regular contact with the Shared Living Coordinator who oversees the program who provides professional support to the Shared Living provider and the Individual receiving services.    Additionally regular quality assurance reviews are completed by the Shared Living Coordinator and the Individuals case manager.

Shared Living providers are independent contractors who receive a stipend for the services they provide.     To qualify as a shared living provider it is helpful, but not required to have experience working with individuals who have developmental disabilities.    The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has developed a standardized application and Handbook for Shared Living Providers.    To review this information please refer to http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/OACPDS/DS/protocol-guidelines/shared_living.html

If you would like more information about the Shared Living Program, or are interested in becoming a Shared Living home provider with Independence Association please call 319-6633.
