Frequently Asked Questions
What types of jobs do you find for people?
Individuals are free to pursue any occupation they choose. Independence Association, however, works closely with each person to identify, develop and support meaningful and realistic jobs that match the person’s work preferences, limitations, skills/abilities, education and interests.
How long will it take before I am working?
This depends on a variety of factors including but not limited to your ability to engage in the process, the availability of the work you are looking for, the time of year, the job market and other factors. Generally it is best to anticipate a period of 90-120 days.
What if I need help learning my job?
Independence Association works closely with individuals and employers to develop natural supports in the work place that can assist with training. On some occasions, an individual’s needs may be more than the employer can support. If this is the case, a job coach is typically assigned to work with and support both the individual and the employer.
How long will I have a job coach?
Our job coaches are not intended to be permanent. The level and length of time an individual may need a job coach depends upon their ability to learn the job and until they no longer need additional supports.
How much will all of this cost me?
In most cases, there is no direct cost to you. While private pay options are available, most services are usually paid for with State or Federal tax dollars received from The Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (Vocational Rehab) and the State of Maine Department of Health and Human Services. (DHHS)
How do I get started?
Applications for these services are available at Independence Association’s main office at 87 Baribeau Drive in Brunswick. You may also choose to have an application mailed to you by calling 725-4371.
To promote independence and ownership, individuals are expected and encouraged to actively participate in job-seeking activities. Individuals are asked to identify potential employers, obtain and complete job applications and attend interviews.
